With current trends of diminishing drug pipelines, safety concerns and lengthy drug development processes, there is a critical need for efficiencies in drug development. The use of concise, compelling and standardized graphics can help create such efficiencies, while focusing attention on sound, scientific interpretation of clinical data.

In this Web cast Dr. O'Connell will outline a taxonomy of statistical graphics for the analysis of clinical data whereby the graphics are categorized via data and metadata typing. Applications of the graphics will be described through the statistical analysis of efficacy endpoints, adverse events, laboratory measurements and vital signs data. In each of these applications Dr. O'Connell will show how concepts of grouping, conditioning, metadata and drill-down; may be used to develop compelling graphical analyses for interpretation of clinical drug development studies.

The statistical graphics are based on S-PLUS Trellis™ and S-PLUS Graphlets®; two of the graphics systems available in the S-PLUS® software. S-PLUS Trellis Graphics™ are useful in representing multivariate data and provide a mechanism for interpreting relationships between an efficacy or safety response and the many explanatory variables and dimensions of clinical data. S-PLUS Graphlets enable drill-down, brushing, and display of meta-data and are well-suited to exploratory analysis and clinical data review. Some of the reports discussed are produced using the S-PLUS Clinical Pack for SAS® Users, which enables the integration of S-PLUS Trellis and S-PLUS Graphlets into the SAS environment for production of clinical study reports and/or incorporation of graphics into SAS ODS output.

Michael O'Connell, Director of Life Sciences,
Insightful Corporation

Michael O'Connell has been working in the medical device, diagnostics, pharmaceutical and biotech arena for the past 15 years. Dr. O'Connell's background and graduate work was in applied statistics and he has published more than 40 papers on statistical methods and life science applications including calibration, mixed models, and nonparametric regression. He has also written several statistical software packages and libraries using S-PLUS, R and SAS. Most recently he has been active in bioinformatics and the statistical analysis of microarray data; and in the development of tools for analysis and reporting of clinical and safety data from S-PLUS.

Dr. O'Connell holds a Bachelors degree in Science from the University of Sydney, a Masters degree in Statistics from the University of New South Wales and a Ph.D. in Statistics from North Carolina State University.
